There was a man who faithfully attended church each week. He knew the answers to all of his problems were close at hand, but he could not quite grasp them. Frustrated and trying to push through all the heartaches, he lifted his hands in thanksgiving to God. It seemed like his arms weighed 100 pounds each. When his family was in trouble, he tried to run to their aid but could not. It seemed as though his body weighed 500 pounds, and he could not move. Continually out of breath, the man barely had energy to drag himself to work and back each day. Though he did not understand why, he was continually angry with his family (and sometimes at the Lord himself) for demanding more of him than he could possibly give.

Though unaware, this man was covered by many sets of very heavy chains. While at church one day, this man was looking around the church sanctuary when the Lord suddenly opened his eyes. He was astonished to see the other men in the fellowship were covered by chains. In fact, he was shocked to see everyone around him staggering around under the weight of the chains which had them bound. At that very moment, he looked down and saw the same chains hanging all over him. In a moment of time, he saw the chains as the reason he was so tired all the time, but he did not understand what they meant or why they were there.

Men: If a thief were to break into your house, would you stand up for your family by jumping into battle to protect them, or would you be a wimp and stand by while the intruder ransacked your place and threatened your wife and children? Think carefully about your answer for a moment. You may be shocked!

The shocking reality is the man portrayed here is the typical believer today. Sadly, the Body of Christ has accepted financial bondage as necessary way of life. As such, they have allowed the thief to enter their house to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).  Most people have been conditioned to see the chains as a necessary part of daily life. This is not so! Just because everyone else does something, don't fall into the trap that you must be like them as well! Think for yourself. Do your own homework and research. Are you wearing those heavy chains and don't know it? Take this simple test to find out:

  1. Do you tithe first (the biblical 10%) out of your income and give offerings on a consistent basis?
  2. If you use credit cards, do you maintain a zero balance each month?
  3. After paying bills, do you have funds available each month to do whatever you want?
  4. Are you making payments on a mortgage, vehicle, or other loan?

If the answer to any of the above is no, then you're in bondage… whether you believe and accept this fact or not! Deliverance is available, and begins with a decision on your part to change.

Men: we've got to stand up and take aim at this threat to our families. Most of us do not need to get second (or third) jobs. The truth is we simply need to plug the holes in our pockets and be stewards of what we've been given! It is not God's will that we spend so much time away from our families. How can we minister to our families when we have to drag ourselves home each night and collapse. The pressure of finances has killed many ministries, family relationships, and dreams… but does not have to kill yours! Trust in the Lord. Do things His way. Be prepared to change the way you think about stewardship. If you're in debt, here is what you need to do to deliver yourself:

• You and your wife need to get up early in the morning before everyone else in the house does.
• Hold her hand and pray with her asking the Father God to bless her
• Admit your unfaithfulness to Him, and your wife, in not being a good steward of His things
• Ask both God, and your wife, to forgive you for not managing things correctly
• After receiving God's forgiveness, ask Him to give you and your wife wisdom to manage His resources
• Be prepared to follow the Lord's guidance. He blesses obedience.

Once you do this, you and your wife can begin to rebuilding your lives the right way. You've done things your way, now it's time to do things His way. This, my dear friend, is the beginning of a wonderful new adventure in life. You'll never be the same again. Thank God for that! Once you start, never look back, but look forward to seeing the wonderful hand of the Lord moving in your life. He paid the price for your success, now agree with Him and move up out of that hole into the wonderful light of freedom!

About The Author
Rick Boynton and his wife Linda pioneered the "radical approach" to debt elimination. While many debt counselors advocate the wife working outside the home, the Boyntons show how the "stay-at-home-mother" actually multiplies, or leverages the husband's income. Together, they wrote a book called "Radical Debt Elimination", which leads families step-by-step through the complete debt elimination process. Not only does this book deal with the obvious financial problems, but it also addresses the deeper issues that caused the problems in the first place.
