We fought a bloody civil war with our fellow countrymen over the matter of slavery. You see, slavery is the opposite of what this country was founded on. As a nation, we want all our citizens to have the right to choose the way of life they believe is best for themselves and their families. When people can choose for themselves the way they'll live, then that is true freedom. Where many people miss it is the understanding that freedom also comes with personal responsibility.
Americans are enslaved today, not by their being born into a particular race, ethnic group, or physical location, but by their decisions. If I choose to do nothing with my life, I've exercised the freedom to make that choice. In the financial realm, self imposed slavery occurs when families choose to bring themselves under the crushing weight of debt. They themselves have made decisions that put them there. They volunteered for slavery.
Slave owners are continually recruiting people with offers to work in their fields. They tell people that they can have what they really want, today. People are lured into bondage by the promise of "easy monthly payments", or "six months same as cash". As soon as people "make their mark" on the contract, they begin working for the taskmasters.
At first, the work does not seem too difficult, nor the taskmaster too overbearing. In making these decisions, people never take into consideration any "bump in the road" that may come along. They always believe that "X" number of dollars will be available each month to cover the bills. When bumps come (and they always do), there is often no extra money to cover the situation. At the end of the month, there frequently is not enough to pay the taskmaster. To help the slave, the taskmaster imposes a late fee, thus putting the slave even further into debt.
The pressure on the slave begins to mount. Soon, they cannot sleep at night and wake up exhausted. The downward spiral has begun. Many slaves seek the services of someone who can "consolidate" their debt. Though this seems like a quick way out, it merely extends their slavery while making the consolidation company lots of money. The slave needs to focus on absolute and total freedom, not simply quick relief from the pressure.
